FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What does Spanish III entail?
Spanish III is an honors class with a rigorous curriculum as students begin to make true connections and substantial gains with the language. Bearing this in mind, in-class instruction and activities will be tailored to develop the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are expected to spend time outside of class honing these skills. In addition to written assignments that will reinforce grammar structures, students should spend at least 30 minutes a night reviewing vocabulary and using their Spanish. Vocabulary can be practiced through flashcards, trifolds or the online website www.quizlet.com. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to become involved in their student's Spanish career; quiz him/her to spell the vocabulary words; ask him/her to share what is going on in class. As the semester progresses students will be able to discuss: Vocabulary topics: daily life, outdoor activities, sports, art, music, body and health, relationships, careers and jobs Grammar topics: review and extension of present and past tense, agreement and comparative adjectives, direct and indirect object pronouns, the subjunctive, uses of por and para, the present perfect tense, the future tense, and the conditional tense

2. What makes up my Spanish III grade?
Like all Spanish III students at FVHS, your final grade is made up of your quarter grades & final exam. Quarter grade HOMEWORK (5 percent) Homework assignments will include vocabulary and grammar practices. You’ll receive a homework grade each week based on the number of assignments you completed on time. You should spend at least 30 minutes a night completing homework or reviewing vocabulary. CLASSWORK (25 percent) Classwork assignments will include “Para Empezar” bellwork, reading activities, vocabulary practices, writing samples, and grammar reviews. You will also have a “Cuadricula” each unit that will help you prepare for your test-it will be given the first day of the unit, turned in the day of the test, and will count double. QUIZZES (30 percent) Quizzes will include vocabulary and grammar assessments and “sorpresas” :). You’ll be given a schedule at the beginning of each unit with the dates of upcoming quizzes. Vocabulary quizzes require you to produce the word and spell it correctly. You can earn up to twenty points of extra credit on each by putting a related word (example: the book=el libro, leer). Grammar quizzes will require you to use the grammatical structures that we study. Any announced grammar quiz will count double. TESTS (40 percent) Tests will be taken at the end of each unit, assessing grammar, vocabulary, listening, writing, and speaking. You’ll be given an outline of the test to help you prepare. Final exam Your final exam is cumulative. You’ll demonstrate your mastery of vocabulary and grammar through a multiple choice assessment, a writing assignment, and a speaking activity. |
3. What happens if I don't turn in an assignment?
The Spanish Department allows work to be turned in up to five school days after the due date for partial credit. After the five day period, no credit will be given. This does not apply to homework, since we discuss the answers in class. 4. What happens if I'm absent? Anytime a student is absent, he/she must bring a pass from the Attendance Office. He/she should then get the assignments and notes from the make up work binder. If the absence is EXCUSED, the student can make up the work for full credit. *In regards to makeup work, the Spanish Department follows Wake County policy, which states: for absences of one (1) to three (3) days, the student will have one day for each day absent. For absences exceeding three (3) days, the student may have two (2) days for each day absent to make up work. Special consideration should be given in the case of extended absences due to injury or chronic illness. It is my expectation that if a quiz/test has been announced and a student is present for instruction, he/she will take the assessment with the class—meaning if they miss the day before a test or a quiz, they will still take it. |
